Cat Pregnancy Stages: A Week-by-Week Guide for Owners
Your cat has been acting differently โ sleeping more, eating with unusual intensity, and her belly has a new roundness to it. If she went outdoors or was around an intact male recently, you might be watching the early cat pregnancy stages unfold in real time. Knowing what to expect helps you support her through it.
Cat pregnancy symptoms can be subtle in the first half of the gestation period, which runs about 63โ65 days from conception. Cat pregnancy signs become more obvious after the midpoint. Questions like do cats get morning sickness and can a pregnant cat go into heat come up for most owners going through this for the first time, and the answers are actually quite interesting.
Early Pregnancy: Weeks 1 to 3
In the first two weeks, there are almost no visible cat pregnancy signs. Fertilized eggs travel to the uterus and implant around day 12โ14. You won’t see physical changes yet, though a vet ultrasound can detect pregnancy as early as day 21.
Around week 3, a phenomenon called “pinking up” occurs โ the nipples become visibly larger and more pink. This is one of the earliest reliable cat pregnancy symptoms that owners can spot at home. Appetite may increase slightly.
Mid-Pregnancy: Weeks 4 to 6
This is when change becomes obvious. The belly begins to round noticeably. Appetite increases significantly. Some queens do experience a brief period of reduced appetite or occasional vomiting around weeks 3โ4, which is the feline equivalent of morning sickness. It is usually mild and brief โ nothing like what humans experience.
A vet can confirm kitten count and assess health via ultrasound or X-ray at this stage. The kittens’ skeletal structure becomes visible on X-ray from about day 45 onward, giving you an accurate count.
Late Pregnancy: Weeks 7 to 9
The queen becomes noticeably heavier and may slow down. She will begin nesting behavior โ seeking out enclosed, quiet spaces. Provide a clean box with soft bedding in a low-traffic area well before the due date so she can claim and settle into it.
Milk production begins in the final week. You may notice colostrum expressed from the nipples. Fetal movement may be visible in the belly.
Can a Pregnant Cat Go Into Heat?
No. Once a cat is pregnant, hormonal changes suppress the estrus cycle. A pregnant cat does not cycle. However, if she miscarries early, especially in the first few weeks when the pregnancy may not have been obvious, she can return to heat relatively quickly.
Nutrition and Veterinary Care
Switch to kitten food, which is calorie-dense and high in protein, from mid-pregnancy through weaning. Avoid supplements unless specifically recommended by your vet โ excess calcium, for example, can interfere with normal labor. Schedule at least one vet visit to assess the pregnancy and prepare for delivery.
Next Steps
Set up the nesting box early. Stock supplies: clean towels, a heat source for newborns, and your vet’s emergency number. Know the signs of labor โ restlessness, vocalization, visible contractions โ and when to call for help. Kittens more than two hours apart during active labor warrant a vet call.
